Activities

Before we go any further, wouldn't you like to see what Pride II looks like? Look at the image above and then view some more photographs of Pride II.

What do you think? Beautiful, isn't she? Can you imagine being one of her crew members and sailing to Asia? Well that's exactly what you get to do. But first you have to do a little background work. Think of all the crew members you think Pride II will need for a successful journey. It might help you to know that she is 100 feet long from bow to stern and 26 feet wide from starboard to port.

Now you should take out a sheet of paper. Title this paper "Shipmates." You will need this paper throughout this lesson, and you will turn your paper in to your teacher at the end of the lesson.

Take a minute or two to discuss with a partner what you think some of the jobs on board might be and who would be needed to fill those jobs. We'll give you one to start with -- a teacher will be selected to travel along with the crew to keep us informed about all the adventures of Pride II. The teacher's job will be to relate to all of us back home information which will make the journey come alive, as though we were there. The teacher will also be able to communicate questions and ideas to the crew and the people they meet on the journey.

  • Predict what jobs you think people would need to do as they travel through Asia. Write that list under #1 on your paper.

To help you make this list, maybe you need to look at the ship again. If you need to go back to the photographs of Pride II you may do so now.
