You will need to read and discuss this information with the class as an introduction to the "Asia with Pride lessons. Some of the vocabulary may need explanation, especially for those not familiar with sailing/boating.

Teaching tips and options for the lesson:
This lesson works best if you begin as a whole class activity. Students will become familiar with the crew members traveling on the journey, so this lesson will encourage students to follow Pride's journey. Students should be allowed to collaborate on ideas. However, the final product should be created individually by students. Be sure to let students know you will be collecting their written work. This will encourage more thoughtful answers.
Motivation/Introduction
SAY TO STUDENTS:
Congratulations and welcome aboard! You have just been selected to sail around the world on Pride II -- a sailing vessel that is a replica of a Baltimore Clipper topsail schooner from 1800. You and your shipmates will set sail on December 6, stopping at ports all over the world. Imagine the people you will meet and the sights you will see. Get ready as you decide what role you will play on our year long journey.
Pride of Baltimore II was commissioned in 1988 to serve as the Goodwill Ambassador for the state of Maryland and the city of Baltimore. It was built in Baltimore's Inner Harbor as a replica of an 1812-era topsail schooner sometimes called Baltimore Clippers. These ships helped America win the War of 1812. Pride II represents the business, tourism, and educational interests of the state. In 1998, she will sail on her first voyage to Asia with port calls scheduled in China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. Pride of Baltimore II makes friends for Baltimore and Maryland wherever she goes. And on this journey, you are invited to sail with her.
Activities
In this lesson, students will:
- Look at some photographs of Pride II.
- Discuss (as a class or with a partner) what some of the jobs on board the ship might
be and what people would be needed to fill those jobs.
- Predict what jobs people would need to do as they travel through Asia. Write that list under #1. Check the photographs again to help make the list.
- Discuss what it would be like to live and work inside Pride II. Find a space in your school that is the same size as Pride II. Measure it out. On deck the ship is 100 feet long by 26 feet wide. The deck below, where the crew lives and where supplies are stored, is even smaller. Discuss how much space the crew will have to sleep in, work in, eat in. Discuss how students' lives would be different if they had to live and work in such a small space!
- Make a list of all the information they can think of that will help them decide how many crew members there should be on Pride II. Predict the number of crew members needed.
- Make and complete the chart below from their discussions and predictions:

- Compare charts with students.

- Compare the students' lists with the actual descriptions on web site.
How did the lists compare?
- Write a sentence that explains how student's list compared to the list on the web site. Discuss your comparisons with a partner. Why were their lists different?
- Choose a crew member to follow during the voyage as their special shipmate. Use the list of crew members to make the selection. Have the students write the name and job title of that crew member on their paper and explain their reasons for choosing this crew member.
- Write a paragraph of 4 sentences or more explaining why they have selected this crew member to follow. What qualities and skills do you think this crew member needs to have to do his/her job well? What responsibilities will this crew member have on the journey?
- Create a classified ad for the job on the crew. Discuss/brainstorm the qualities a person would need to have to do this job. Would they have to be strong? Good with math? Each job will require different skills. Each job has different responsibilities.
ASSIGNMENT
Students have been asked to imagine that they are writing a classified ad to advertise for people to apply for a position on Pride II. Supply an example of the classified ads from the Baltimore Sun.
How will you know if your students did a good job with their classified ads?
Their classified ads will:
be written from the perspective of the ship's captain
include the name of the job
include the qualities and skills the person should have to do the job on the ship
include the responsibilities the person will have if they are chosen to work on the crew
EXTENSION IDEAS
Have students create a life-sized model of the crew member you would like to be. Students will draw an outline of a person on oversized construction paper (butcher paper works well). Students should add descriptive words or phrases from their classified ads that describe the qualities, skills and responsibilities for this crew job. These drawings could be used as part of a room or hall display. These drawings can be created individually or as a mural
Have students make a rough sketch of their crew member on plain paper first. This can serve as a cover sheet for all of their future Pride II work that might be kept in their notebook or on a folder. The creation of a model of the crew member will require a reflection of all of the information the students have obtained. You may choose to provide a scoring tool for the character.
Example:
- must show first draft on paper
- character must be life size - head and shoulders required
- must be in color
- must be 3 dimensional
- must show qualities, skills and responsibilities necessary for the job
Materials needed:
Art supplies for students to create the drawings include:
- brown butcher paper
- coat hangers for hanging the drawings
- glue, scissors, crayons, markers, yarn for hair, buttons for eyes.
The drawings can be as simple or as elaborate as you decide. The more attention the students pay to their crew counterpart, the more ownership and interest they will have throughout the journey. Remember the journey and lessons will continue for the remainder of the school year!
Elementary Level: Plan to have a place in the room for display of the characters created. Students will need to update character information as the journey progresses. You may plan to have a small group of students create a life size paper model of Pride II as a background for display.
Middle Level (Team Approach): You may decide that all subject teachers begin with this lesson so that all students have a room to display their characters. These characters will be an on-going part of the project. If your team has a pod or wing to themselves, you may want to create a hall display with a paper model of Pride II as a background.
