  1. Why might specific weather information be important to you?

  2. What kind of weather is, or was, happening in each of these locations?
    • Baltimore -

    • Honolulu -

    • Pride II -

  3. How is the weather different in the three locations?

  4. Why do you think the weather is different in the three locations?

Part II: Sailing Vessels and the Wind - Activity 2 - Worksheet

    1. What is the distance from A to B ?_______________

    2. How long is each tack?_____________

    3. How many tacks are needed to get from A to B?______________

    4. What is the total distance traveled from A to B (multiply tack length by number of tacks)?________________

    5. What is the difference between the actual distance from A to B and the distance traveled?______________________

This is the extra distance a sailing ship has to travel to use the wind as it's "engine" when the wind is coming from the direction it wants to go.

Part III: Winds and Currents Worksheet

    ACTIVITY 3

    ACTIVITY 4

If you threw a bottle into the ocean from Ocean City, Maryland, where do you think it would land? Mark an "A" on your currents map to show where you think it would land. If you know the name of that location, write it here. What would affect its course: winds, currents, or both?

If you threw a bottle into the ocean from Los Angeles, California, where do you think it would land? Mark a "B" on your currents map to show where you think it would land. If you know the name of that location, write it here.

If you threw a bottle into the ocean from Ocean City, Maryland that had a sail on it, would that change its destination? If you think the destination would change, mark a "C" on your currents map to show where you think it would now land. If you know the name of that location, write it here. If you do not think the destination would change, write that here. What would affect its course: winds, currents, or both?

    Part IV: El Niño Worksheet

    ACTIVITY 5

Water Surface Temperatures Web Site Instructions

Scroll down the page until you find Forecast Summary. Under here, click on Pictures of the forecast. Now several small diagrams will come up, each labeled with the months it is valid for. Find the diagram for January 1998 and click on it. January may be just one of several months designated for a single diagram.

When the diagram has come up on your screen, use your finger to trace Pride II's course to Hawaii.

    1. Is the Pride of Baltimore II presently in the area El Niño is affecting the water surface temperatures?_________

    2. Did Pride's route up the coast of Central America take her through the affected area? ___________

    ACTIVITY 6

Summarize one of the USA Today stories you found on El Niño.

Summary: (be sure to include what happened, to whom, where, and why)
