 Challenge 5:
Cultural Diversity in the European Union

As the countries of Europe talk to each other about unification, they have tried to decide on some common solutions to problems such as health care, energy, cultural diversity and caring for the environment. How do the policies on cultural diversity of countries being visited by Pride compare to one another and to the policies of the European Union?

The Amsterdam Treaty addresses the following issues related to the rights of individuals:

· prohibition of any discrimination on grounds of nationality (Article 12)
· right to move and reside freely within the territory of the European Union (Article 18(2))
· social security for migrant workers (Article 42)
· measures to combat social exclusion (Article 137(2))
· equal opportunities and equal treatment (Article 141)

To read more about cultural diversity in the European Union, read the Proposal for a Council Directive implementing the principle of equal treatment between persons irrespective of racial or ethnic origin . You may also wish to visit the sites listed in the challenge on European Unification.
