War Games!Let's play a game! Let's find out what it's like to be big and powerful on the seas, or small and agile! In this game, you'll find out that both of them have their advantages - and both of them have their disadvantages. Either one can win, and either one can lose. It's up to you. This game is going to require some strategy, though, if you want to win! Do you want to win? Are you ready for the challenge? This is a simulation game, representing an encounter on the high seas between a Baltimore Clipper privateer and a British merchant vessel with a British Naval escort. Remember that the Baltimore Clipper is smaller, has less guns, but can move much quicker through the water. The British ships are much larger, the Naval ship has many guns, but is much slower. The British ships also can't move in as many directions, to simulate that they are not as agile, or maneuverable, as the Baltimore Clipper. So take a moment and think about what that will do to the game. Which side would you rather play? Read the Rules and Procedures, and prepare the Game Pieces and Board. Ask your teacher for a printout of each of these if you don't already have them. You will need a partner to play the game with. One of you will play the Baltimore Clipper privateer, the other will play the British ships. Once you have prepared the game pieces and board, and have read the rules and procedures, each of you will make a prediction as to which side will win the encounter and why. Record your prediction on your Worksheet. At the conclusion of the game, you will each summarize the encounter on your Worksheet, and compare the results to your prediction. Thoughtful Application Based on the game and what you have learned through this lesson, you will evaluate the importance of Baltimore and the Baltimore Clippers in writing a newspaper article. Good luck, and have fun!
