Looking at Artifacts

Archaeologists study artifacts found on archaeological sites, like those on the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, to learn about the culture, or way of life, of a group of people.

You will find some photographs of artifacts below. These artifacts were found at two prehistoric archaeological sites at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum. Archaeologists have determined that both sites are prehistoric - that is, they date to a time before Europeans were living in what is now Maryland. The people who made and used these objects were probably the Patuxent Indians, a tribe still living in southern Maryland when the first Europeans arrived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Descendants (relatives) of the southern Maryland tribes, the Piscataway, still live in Maryland today.

Study the photographs of these artifacts. What do you think the artifacts could have been used for? Record your answers on Worksheet #3: Looking at Artifacts.
