So if St. Mary's City Disappeared Once Before,
Why is it so Important
Now?
St. Mary's City claims a very important place in Maryland history.
Many things happened there for the first time in Maryland, and they
happened a long time ago. Maybe you have learned about some of them
when you and your class studied Maryland History. Since you have
learned a lot of information about Maryland's first capital, you are
ready to create your own timeline of St. Mary's City Firsts. You are
also ready to answer that question at the top of the page - Why is St.
Mary's City so important now?
In order to complete this Maryland Exploration, you will need to
review all of the important things that happened for the first time at
St. Mary's City. To help you take notes, you should use the Important Firsts Worksheet.
To complete your timeline,
you will need to visit the Significant Firsts web page from the Historic
St. Mary's City Museum web site. Return to this page after you have
viewed that web site and taken some notes.
Using what you have learned in this Maryland Exploration, and from
what you have read on the St. Mary's City web site, you're now ready
to choose six of the events that you think were the most important and
most interesting things that happened first at St. Mary's City.
Then, you'll create a timeline of those events by putting these events
in chronological order. Remember that chronological order means
events in order from the oldest date (or the date that happened the
longest time ago) to the most recent date.
You can use events from the "Events of State Significance" or the
"Events of National Significance" lists on the St. Mary's City web
site to make your timeline, or you can use events that you have found
out about through completing this Maryland Exploration. You might
find you know a little bit more than you thought you did!
After you have created your timeline, you're ready to write a short
paragraph to answer the question Why is St. Mary's City so important
now? Remember to use the information in your timeline to help you
answer this question.
