A Day in the Life of Opencanchenko
|
It is morning, a beautiful day. The sun has risen in the sky. It is
time to begin the day. Opencanchenko will start his day by checking
the fires that were set around some trees yesterday. Opencanchenko
and others from his village are clearing a new area for farming in the
fall.

After an hour of checking how much burning had taken place
during the night, Opencanchenko goes back to his witchott for something
to eat. His wife has fixed a meal of corncakes made from maize (the
Indian word for corn), smoked rockfish from Chesapeake Bay, and a bowl
of gooseberries, raspberries, mulberries, and strawberries that she
gathered yesterday afternoon. This is a very plentiful time of year.
There is lots of food to eat - not like in the past months when food
was scarce. It was so bad earlier this year, several of the village
dogs had to be sacrificed until the birds from the north returned and
the planting could begin again.
