Going Fishing
Illustration by Theodore De Bry, ca. 1690 Opencancheck is now ready to begin the rest of his day. First he goes down to the stream to work on the fences that his tribe has made to trap fish that swim in the stream. Opencancheck and his fellow tribesmen took wooden stakes and pounded them into the stream bottom. These stakes were placed very close together. A small opening was left where the fish could swim through. Few fish ever find the opening in order to swim back out. Opencancheck is not alone at the stream. There are several other men from the village working on this project. Once the fence is finished, the women of the village will come to get the fish that have been caught. Answer Item #6 on your Worksheet. Trapping fish in a fenced enclosure is only one way Opencancheck catches fish. At other times, he uses nets or spears. Sometimes he fastens bone hooks to the end of a line - sort of like a fishing pole. The tidewaters of the Chesapeake are plentiful not only for fish, but for clams, oysters, shrimp, and crabs too.
