The Evolution of Shipbuilding Through the Age of Sail
|
Native Americans cruised the waters of the Chesapeake in dugout log
canoes long before European settlers arrived. These canoes were cut
from a single log.

When European colonists first settled around the Chesapeake, they also
adopted log canoes as a means of transportation. There were very few
roads cut through the forested land surrounding the Bay. The
streams, rivers, and inlets that open into Chesapeake Bay are so
numerous, travel from one side of the bay to the other was very
difficult by land. Travel by water was the easiest solution.
The numerous rivers and streams became the roads
or highways for these settlers.
