The Dugout Log Canoe

The dugout log canoe was a boat that anyone could build. All you needed was a big tree, an adze (an ax-like tool that dates back nearly 4,000 years), and time. You didn't need to know anything about shipbuilding. Shipbuilding is a skill that required training that few of the colonists had.

But the dugout log canoe was also very limited by how little it could carry, and how far it could travel. (How far would you like to paddle a canoe?)
