What is an Immigrant?

People who leave one country to move to another are called immigrants. The movement of people from one country to another is called immigration. In this Learning Exploration, you will learn about what it was like to be an immigrant coming to America and arriving in Baltimore to start a new life. You will see how you can learn things about the past by examining a variety of primary source materials, such as photographs, newspapers, letters, and family stories.

While you are working on this Exploration, you should have your worksheet ready so that you can take notes and answer questions on your Immigration to Baltimore, 1883: Rebecca Novitsky's Story Worksheet. Your teacher will give you a copy of this worksheet.
