How has Travel Changed Since the Construction of the National Road?In this lesson, you have learned about how the National Road swarmed with wagons, stagecoaches, people, and animals, traveling east and west. In time, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, and later the railroads, connected east with west. During the early 1900's, the travelers deserted the canal boats and then even the National Road. The Conestoga wagons disappeared and taverns and wagon stands closed their doors. New ways of transportation were faster, cheaper, and safer than the old ways. Today, products from Maryland and all parts of America continue to flow through Baltimore in trains, ships, airplanes, and over roads. Now it is your turn to think about new forms of transportation since the 1800's. You can make a "Connecting Maryland to the World" flip book. Click here to see directions for constructing a flip book. On the cover, identify four ways people of Maryland are linked by transportation and communication systems today. On the inside of the book draw four pictures that illustrate each of the ways you have chosen. On the back of the book, explain and give examples for each of your choices. Share your book with your teacher and classmates.
