1978 - A Trip to Fort McHenry on DefenderIf you wanted to travel by water from Baltimore's Inner Harbor to Fort McHenry in 1978, you could have bought a ticket near the site of the Maryland Science Center for a ride aboard Defender (which is now called Indominable). This boat had a propeller turned by a diesel engine. It seated approximately 45 passengers. A ticket cost $3.00. The boat took passengers to the only dock off Fort McHenry. The passengers then toured the fort and sometimes picnicked on the grounds of the Fort. When they were finished touring Fort McHenry, the boat took them back to the Inner Harbor.
On the way to the Fort, the captain told the passengers about the sights one could see on the harbor. She told about the Domino Sugar Factory, the grain piers, and the historic round-cornered Dutch warehouse in Fells Point. When the boat arrived at Fort McHenry, the captain docked the boat with the help of her deckhand. The captain and the deckhand were the only two people needed to run the boat.
