Maryland Pursuit
Making Up Questions
Earn Extra Points for Your Team
By Challenging Students from Around the State
Your team can research and make up new questions about Maryland. Mail
your questions (with evidence attached) to Maryland Pursuit. Especially
good questions will be awarded 20 points toward the Grand Prize - a sail
aboard Pride of Baltimore II in spring 2002! Some of your questions may
be posted on the Internet for other students to answer. Here are some
guidelines for researching and making up good questions.
- Work as a team. The same teams that answer questions can work
together to write new ones. Each team needs an adult sponsor.
- Research and write up your question. The question should be
about Maryland's history, geography, culture, or ecology. It should be
about something interesting and important -- something that other kids
would like to know about. Use the Maryland Pursuit Writing Questions
Worksheet to help organize your information. Use a separate Worksheet
for each question.
- Give a Clue: Offer your follow students a hint as to where they
can find the answer to your question. The clue might refer students to
a book or a web site or a historical marker, or some other source of
information. Be creative with different kinds of clues!
- Write out the correct answer to your question. This will help
in scoring other students' responses to your question.
- Attach your evidence! You need to prove that your answer to
your question is correct. The proof must be in writing. If the proof
is in a book, photocopy the title page as well as the page(s) in the
book where the answer is contained. Highlight the answer. If the answer
is on a web page, print out the page with the answer. Highlight the URL
and the answer. If the proof is a statement from an expert, write out
the statement and give the name, address, and phone number of the
expert. In short, PROVE THAT YOUR ANSWER IS CORRECT. Staple your
evidence to the back of the Worksheet.
