Things are moving fast now. Yesterday we sailed from Cleveland to Erie, arriving here at midnight. We are berthed across from the brig Niagara, a replica of the vessel that was instrumental in Oliver Hazard Perry's victory over the British fleet in the battle of Lake Erie in 1813. The Battle of Lake Erie looms large in local lore. Though seemingly a quaint patriotic gambit at this distance through time, the battle is represented here as having secured America's northwest frontiers, paving the way for future westward expansion. Across the lake, however, the entire War of 1812 is seen quite differently. In Canada, it is viewed as an undiluted success, whereby American designs on Canada were decisively repulsed. The defense of Canada, by Canadians, was a defining experience in the evolution of a Canadian identity.
We had the opportunity to sail in company with Niagara on the waters off of Erie. It was a gray, gusty day that saw the two ships crossing tacks and exchanging cannon fire. Though very different in appearance, the Niagara and the Pride of Baltimore II are the only two vessels that I know of that that specifically replicate War of 1812 fighting ships. It was great to see them berthed side by side and sailing together. By way of welcoming us to Erie, the captain and crew of the Niagara threw a fabulous barbecue for us. The camaraderie that exists between the various traditional sailing ships and their crews is one of the great elements of this business that keeps us coming back.
